5 Signs Your Website Is Costing You Customers

Your website might look fine to you, but if any of these five things are happening, there's a good chance you're losing customers without even knowing it.

1. It Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load

Speed matters more than almost anything else. Research consistently shows that over half of mobile visitors will leave a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load. That's not an exaggeration — it's measured, documented, and it's costing businesses real money every day.

Common culprits: oversized images, too many plugins, cheap hosting, and unoptimised code. The fix is usually straightforward once you know where the bottlenecks are.

2. It Doesn't Work Properly on Mobile

More than 60% of web traffic in Australia comes from mobile devices. If your site has tiny text, buttons that are hard to tap, or layouts that break on smaller screens, you're turning away the majority of your visitors.

Open your site on your phone right now. Can you read everything without zooming? Can you tap every button easily? If not, that's a problem.

3. There's No Clear Call to Action

A visitor lands on your site. They're interested. Now what? If your homepage doesn't make it obvious what to do next — call, book, enquire, buy — people will just... leave. Every page should have a clear, visible action you want the visitor to take.

4. Your Contact Information Is Hard to Find

This sounds basic, but it's shockingly common. If someone has to dig through multiple pages to find your phone number or email, many won't bother. Your contact details should be visible on every page — ideally in the header or a sticky element.

5. It Looks Outdated

Design trends move fast. A site that looked great in 2020 can feel dated now — and visitors notice. An outdated design signals that the business might be inactive, unreliable, or behind the times. You don't need to redesign every year, but a modern, clean look builds instant trust.

What to Do About It

The good news is that most of these issues are fixable without starting from scratch. A focused audit can identify exactly what's holding your site back, and targeted improvements can make a dramatic difference in how many visitors actually become customers.
